UNFOLDING TERRAIN DESIGN STUDIO

With 20 years of experience, Unfolding Terrain’s marketplace specialization are the Non-Profit and Education sectors. Unfolding Terrain specializes in providing professional high-end design and brand strategies. Visual communications strategically position clients in the marketplace for success. Successful design connects with people on a cultural and sub-cultural levels, while creating an emotional connection with the audience/end user. As a design studio, Unfolding Terrain combines practice, theory, and experimentation in both work for hire projects and studio initiated projects. Unfolding Terrain’s design services include printed publications, brand/identity programs, book design, web sites, motion graphics, typeface design, and environmental design. Current studio initiated projects include textile design, custom typography and typefaces, and irreverent posters. Unfolding Terrain has been published nationally and internationally in the following publications and books: SUGO, the Italian design publication; 2D plus 3D magazine, the Polish Design Quarterly; Rockport books Visual Language for Designers, Design for Special Events, No Rules Logos, Radical Design Solutions that Break the Rules; the Chronicle book, 1000 Fonts; Crescent Hill Books’ Designing for the Greater Good; and Japan’s P.I.E. books Logo World and Postcard Graphics. Design competition and exhibition accolades include: 2004, 2008, and 2009 HOW Magazine’s International Design Annual; The Type Director’s Club; AIGA Detroit Design RE:View 07, 05, and 03; the 2007/2008 and 2009/2010 AIGA DC 50 Design Biennials; and the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington’s 59th, 60th, and 61st Annual Shows.

FRANCHESKA GUERRERO, Principal and Design Director

Francheska is Principal and Design Director at Unfolding Terrain. She is also Interim Chair of Undergraduate Design and Associate Professor of the BFA Design department at the Corcoran College of Art + Design in Washington D.C. Francheska earned a BFA at College for Creative Studies (CCS), and an Masters of Fine Art in the 2D Design department at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Francheska’s work has been published nationally and internationally in the following publications and books: Rockport books Visual Language for Designers, Design for Special Events, No Rules Logos, Radical Design Solutions that Break the Rules; 1000 Fonts; Crescent Hill Books’ Designing for the Greater Good; and Japan’s P.I.E. books Logo World and Postcard Graphics. Design competition and exhibition accolades include: 2004, 2008, and 2009 HOW Magazine’s International Design Annual; The Type Director’s Club; AIGA Detroit Design RE:View 07, 05, and 03; the 2007/2008 and 2009/2010 AIGA DC 50 Design Biennials; and the Art Directors Club of Metropolitan Washington’s 59th, 60th, and 61st Annual Shows. Lectures include “American Design” at the Swedish Embassy, House of Sweden in Washington D.C., the “Nancy Clarvit Design Week Lecture Series” at the University of Maryland, and the “Spotlight on DC Design Lecture Series” at George Mason University. Francheska co-curated the Urban Forest Project DC at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Gallery 31. One of Francheska’s banner designs was selected to be installed in the Urban Forest Project DC.

SCOTT BURKS, IT Manager and Partner

Scott Burks has over 15 years experience in writing, production management, and IT support. Current and former clients include General Motors, ASC, inc., and the Corcoran College of Art and Design. Scott is responsible for production management and IT support. Scott has a BA from Wayne State University.
